Horizon Europe is the EU's research and innovation funding program for the period 2021-2027. It has a budget of €95.5 billion and is designed to support excellent science, industrial competitiveness and innovation, as well as addressing societal challenges such as climate change, energy, health, and digitalization. The program is open to a wide range of participants, including universities, research organizations, and companies. Horizon Europe consists of three pillars:

  1. The Open Science pillar - supports basic research and the sharing of scientific knowledge.

  2. The Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness pillar - supports innovation and the development of new products and services to address major societal challenges and enhance the competitiveness of European industry.

  3. The Innovative Europe pillar - supports the development of new technologies, innovation ecosystems and market uptake of innovative solutions.

Horizon Europe also includes partnerships with non-EU countries and participation in international research and innovation initiatives. The aim of the program is to strengthen Europe's scientific and industrial base, promote innovation and competitiveness, and support the transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon, and resource-efficient economy.
