Project Description:
The Youth Exchange will take place in the end of June – the beginning of July in the town of Dobrinishte, Bulgaria, having the main theme Media Literacy. It will include 30 young people aged 18-30 from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Lithuania and Malta.
During the project participants will have the opportunity to come together, exchange experiences, experiment different techniques and explore media literacy and social inclusion.
Some of the objectives are:
- To understand what media literacy is.
- To introduce a digital media environment. To learn who the “players” in cyberspace are.
- To provide tools to young people to apply critical thinking on the information they receive and to work with media and multimedia content.
- To develop the skills needed to identify opinions from facts
- To be aware of the nature of fake news
- To acquire fact checking skills
- To develop competences in audio-visual technics and editing
- To raise awareness on hate speech off-line and online.
- To develop competences to create media content
Among the most important skills from `the kitchen` we will acquire or improve are those for:
- Tracking sources of information, including recognition of sponsored and paid content;
- Verifying the authenticity of photo and video material online, such as checking for old images transmitted as current;
- Lateral reading and perception of the data in details
- Evaluating sources of information through domain verification, assessment of source expertise, quote verification, etc.
- Checking URLs, checking social networking accounts.
This project will work on developing a greater understanding of how youth perceive information and how they process it. Working on methods to help young people gain skills and competences in the fields of media and social media so that we can enhance their employability while still learning through the methods of non-formal and informal education.
Working methods will vary from theories to practices, discussions, sharing and reflection and will be based on non-formal education, all centered on different aspects of inclusion and health in the youth context. It will be both participants-based as well as peer to peer sharing, discussions. Specially designed methods will be used during the Youth Exchange to interact and involve the youngsters in active participation in each section. Different active exercising in the nature will be organized with the involvement of local youth to tackle the topic of media literacy for intercultural dialogue and inclusion.
